Why is mankind in need of salvation?
Mankind is in need of salvation due to the fall of Adam. His original sin is imputed to his progeny resulting in spiritual death to all. Although man is born physically alive, he is also born spiritually dead, enslaved to an indwelling sin nature. In order to redeem mankind from this fallen state, God the Father sent His Son as a savior to be a substitute and sacrifice for sin (Romans 3:9, 23, 5:12-21, Galatians 3:22, Ephesians 2:1-3, 1 Timothy 1:15, 1 John 4:9-10).
Who can be saved?
Jesus Christ died for all men so that all can be saved. Further, while the majority of mankind will not be saved, it is God’s desire that all men “be saved and come to and knowledge of the truth” (John 3:17, 4:42, Romans 10:13, 1 Timothy 2:4, 4:10, Titus 2:11, 1 John 2:2).
An honest consideration of these realities ought to prompt an individual to ask the most significant question of all. Namely, “What must I do to be saved?”
The apostle Paul was asked this same question and his answer was simple and straightforward, "believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved." (Acts 16:30-31). Also compare John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
If you believe that Jesus Christ is who the Bible says He is and paid the penalty for your sins, then you are saved. Additionally, salvation is a grace gift obtained on the basis of faith alone not by works. Mankind’s part is to simply believe (John 6:29, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 1:13, 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, that no one should boast”).
